Git Brain Developer Resources & Local MCP Setup

From install to a verified agent connection

The supported setup stays on your computer and starts from the editor extension. No Git Brain API key, hosted account integration, or remote MCP service is required.

1. Install Git Brain: Install the extension from VS Marketplace or Open VSX, then open a Git repository in a supported VS Code-compatible IDE.
2. Open the MCP server manager: Use Git Brain's MCP controls to choose editor registration, a user-triggered stdio setup, or the optional loopback HTTP transport.
3. Connect a supported agent: Follow the generated client-specific instructions for Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, or another compatible client.
4. Verify repository access: Ask the connected agent to list Git Brain tools or read repository status. Keep the editor and target repository open while the local server is active.

What a successful setup proves: The agent can call the extension's structured repository tools, but it receives neither credentials nor absolute repository paths. Mutating Git operations remain protected by Git Brain's review and confirmation rules.
